Ruins of Cathedral in Antigua.

Behind the facade of the cathedral, one sees the devastation caused by the repeated earthquakes in Guatemala. Colonial architects tried a number of techniques to help their buildings withstand these earthquakes, but none of them worked. The colonial capital was finally abandoned due to these in favor of Guatemala City. Most of the artwork and retablas (gold covered wooden pieces at the front of the cathedrals) were moved to Guatemala City.
