Course Description: The objective of this course is to develop the complete design and construction of a reinforced concrete cross for Amigos De Jesus in Posa Verdas, Honduras. The class will be divided into two project groups who will develop the construction sequencing, design of the formwork, cross, and foundation. Work for the construction aspects of the project will focus on building the cross in Honduras.  The class will research the seismology of the region to determine the appropriate seismic design parameters.  Material testing of concrete and steel samples from Honduras will be conducted to determined material strengths to be used in design.  The design will include use of appropriate US building codes to size the members, reinforcing steel, and foundation.  Final drawings of the design as well as as-built drawings of the actual structure will be prepared and included in the final submittal.

Introduction to Amigos De Jesus

Amigos De Jesus, a Catholic Orphanage in Posa Verdas, Honduras, was started in 1998 by Sister Teresita, SSND a Honduran Notre Dame Nun, Christine and Anthony Granese, residents of Norristown, PA, and Father Dennis O'Donnell, Rector of Malvern Retreat House.  The mission of Amigos De Jesus is:

bulletto offer children who have been abandoned, abused, and left on the streets of Honduras the opportunity to grow in a life-time skill (such as farming, carpentry, welding, clothing, etc.)
bulletto provide a quality educational program
bulletto prepare the children in their faith
bulletto wrap the children in an experience of being loved and cared for

The orphanage rests on 70 acres of fertile land in the Northwest corner of a mountainous section of Honduras, about a two hour ride from San Pedro Sula airport, near the border of Guatemala.  The first building, finished in the summer of 1999, is a three-story block wall structure that will house the school, caretakers' residence and a workshop.  The residence and dining room for children will be finished in May, 2000. Construction of other facilities will follow.  It is anticipated that by the fall of 2000 the orphanage will house thirty children.
