Course Objectives:

  1. Complete the design of a reinforced concrete building and foundation.
  2. Apply current codes and technology used in the practice of structural engineering.
  3. Effectively communicate, in written, graphical, and verbal form, the outcomes of the project.

Course Description

The objective of this course is to develop the complete design of a reinforced concrete building that will serve as a chapel and volunteer center for a boys orphanage in Honduras.  The class will be divided into project groups who will develop the foundation, column, slab, beam, wall, stair and roof designs.  Work for the construction aspects of the project in Honduras will focus on building the roof and supporting system (columns and beams).  The design will include use of appropriate US building codes to size the structural elements, reinforcing steel, and foundations.  Final drawings of the design will be prepared and included in the final submittal.

Groups must meet regularly and record meeting minutes.  Group members will grade one another at the mid-semester and end of the course.  You will present a technical progress report (written and oral) five times through the course of the semester.  Your final report will include a section on the recent history of Honduras, a project summary, calculations, design drawings, and a comparison of your design to the as-built structure.  The report should include a discussion of the differences in the design and construction of structures in the US vs. a third world country.  Two complete copies of the all progress reports and the final report must be submitted.  The projects will be presented to the class and faculty.
